Excavation Day!!!!!
This project required us to access across the driveway to get to the pool construction area. In these situations we excavate the pool with a track hoe and shuttle the dirt across the driveway with a skid steer to the dump trucks which are too heavy to cross the driveway once they are loaded. This type of excavation is commonly referred to as a "Bobcat Shuttle". The excavation and forming was completed on the first day.
Pool structural steel
Due to expansive soils and the size of the pool we installed #4 steel rebar on 5" & 10" centers with a 4 bar box beam around the perimeter of the pool. We also installed additional steel in the skimmers. The steel phase was completed in 1 day and and the belly steel inspection was scheduled for Monday 3-17-25.
Plumbing, electric bonding of the steel and rough electric
Day 3 was another busy day with the plumbers and electricians working simultaneously to complete their work before Monday's inspection. The plumbing phase included installing the pool and spa plumbing as well as plumbing for the LED bubbler fountain, LED water bowls and water feature booster pump. The electricians ran the rough electric, installed the light niches and bonded the pool. An underground electric inspection was scheduled for Tuesday 3-18-25
Soil Injections, pool steel bonding (belly steel) inspection passed
Based on data obtained from the USDA soil survey we determined the linear extensibility measurement of the soils at this location to be 3.0-5.9. Soil injections are recommended when the linear extensibility exceeds 3.0. Soil or chemical injections bond with clay soils to greatly reduce their shrink/ swell potential reducing the likelihood of pool movement or structural cracks. Depending on the circumstances we may also recommend soil injections for the pool decking as well.
Gunite and underground electric inspection passed
Gunite is a term widely used to describe pneumatically applied concrete which is a process where a high powered air compressor truck forces the dry concrete through a hose where it mixes with water at the nozzle. This process and the proportions of sand, cement and water that are used allow the concrete to be shot vertically and form the fine details of the pool shape. We proudly use American Gunite who guarantees their product for the lifetime you own your home (commonly referred to as a "lifetime warranty").
Tile & coping day 1 and concrete pool equipment pad installation
With most of the 1 day phases behind us and the structure solidified we begin the more detailed aesthetic pieces of the project like the tile, coping and stone work. We also poured the concrete equipment pad in preparation of setting the pool equipment on 3-20-25
Tile & coping day 2 and Pool Equipment installation
This project has a vanishing edge spa spillway, rolled tile spa beam and a ledgestone wall raised 18" for the LED water bowls. In this instance we chose to build the raised wall with concrete block rather than shoot it out of gunite which can be necessary if the wall was also being used as a retaining wall.
Tile & coping day 3 and gas line installation
The clients did a great job making the final material selections in my opinion. They chose to use a 1" x 1" glass tile (NANY 105 - The Bronx) for the spa water line, spa rolled beam and spa spillway, a very similar tile (NANY 1205 - The Bronx) for the pool waterline tile and trim tile on the steps and benches and Tropical Dew Waterjet ledgestone for the raised wall and back of the spa. Part of the tile order was delayed which prevented us from completing tile & coping but fortunately it will not delay the other phases of the project. The gas line was also installed today and scheduled for an inspection on 3-24-25
Gas line inspection passed
In addition to the gas line inspection we finished installing the computer control system and other electric components
Deck form
The concrete deck forms have been installed, downspout connections and deck drains installed and a deck form inspection has been scheduled for 3-26-25.
Stay tuned for updates. Completion (plaster) is currently scheduled for 4-7-25 which would put us at 25 Calendar days of construction.
